Consumed Culture 09/23/2008

I was watching a seminar by Donald Miller today, author of Blue Like Jazz and To Own a Dragon.  One of his comments really struck a chord with me- it was about being in a marketed culture that is selling me spirituality!  I have been thinking about it all day, and here is what I have resolved:
1. Our culture is all about stuff, so why wouldn't our concept of religion and spirituality be all about stuff?
2. If stuff is not the answer to fulfillment, why do we want it?
3. If a relationship with God is the answer to fulfillment, why do we not want it?
4. Has our culture so influenced my individuality that I am no longer an individual, but a cultured stuff possessor who wants community but is too selfish to actually be in community?

Still working out the kinks,
Connected!

What does this phrase have to do with anything?  Actually it has to do with everything!  I just read an article that asked the question "So what?"  It is a phrase that is asked when a question is posed that we basically know already, or are wondering how it affects my life from this point on.  So what does change have to do with everything?  Change is a fabric of every aspect of life, we just miss it for the most part.  Think of time in matters of seconds rather than days.  It is realizing that change happens faster and more often than we acknowledge.  Time is only one facet of many- relationships, family, jobs, careers, finances, cars, homes, lifestyle, and the list goes on- So what?  Here is the moment of truth- how do we respond and react to these never ending changes, do we resist, do we encourage- how do you change with life as it continually changes?
